How to play Superman Returns (USA)
You can move around freely in the 80-square-mile map of the game, and your figure can fly into the stratosphere (but not into the ocean) around the made-up city. The player can use all of Superman's abilities, but they need to "master" them because Superman could hurt the city if they are used wrongly.
If the player wants to use heat vision, they need to make sure they have the right amount of power. Too much power can exterminate civilians and destroyed things. People who play the game start out with the most basic versions of Superman's skills. To get stronger, faster, farther, and do more damage, they have to upgrade these powers.
When playing the game, the player can fly at different speeds, with the fastest being 800 mph, which is faster than sound. The screen will blur more as Superman moves faster. There will be different amounts of energy in each power.
Superman can't be hurt or exterminated in the main game; it doesn't matter what happens to him. In War World, the only time this isn't true is during the second part of the tutorial mission, which has three boss fights in a row without a checkpoint.
Superman does take too much damage to fail the task. Metropolis has a damage meter. The game stops if too much damage is done to the city during a mission or if the damage meter runs out of points. There is a meter on Superman's body that goes down as more power is used. As Superman does in many comic books, the player can fly Superman into the air and let him soak up sunlight to recharge his health faster.
The player has to think of new ways to use Superman's powers in the game. For example, Superman could use his frozen breath to put out a building fire, but he might not be able to save all the civilians in time. He could also pick up a fire truck and park it on top of a building next to the one that was on fire for faster extinguishment.
